The horror renaissance of 2007 is well and truly over. In recent times the genre is having a bit of rough patch. They are increasingly running out of ideas and as a result they are homogenising – I am finding it hard to differentiate my ‘Sinister’ movies from ‘The Conjuring’ ones! While there is the odd stand out movie; the entire genre is in danger of repeating the mistakes it made in the late 80s. There are only so many times you can watch a young, attractive couple get haunted by malevolent spirits.
Over a year ago I wrote about how my backlog was getting out of control; and since then I’ve seen my backlog of games do nothing but grow longer and longer.
Even when I have the best intentions of “getting stuck into this” and “I’ll definitely play that this week” it continues to taunt me as it my steam library stretches beyond the reaches of my monitors.
I wish this was merely the case on PC but the sad fact is that it has spread to every console I own too! My PS4 HDD is not only stuffed full of games, but there are countless others who have been relegated to “my library”. I have 3 16GB 3DS SD cards heaving with games I’ve bought and never played, my VITA has become a graveyard for abandoned playthroughs. Continue reading
With the advent of consumer VR we have been promised new gaming experiences; the kind that had been, up until now, impossible!
Yet here we have ‘Until Dawn: Rush of Blood’ giving gamers a chance to play a genre that had been placed on the scrap heap thanks to the dawn of the HD era.
‘Rush of Blood’ is an old-school on-rails shooter in the vein of ‘House of the Dead’ and it is one hell of a ride! Continue reading
For frightfest a few years ago I wrote a post which examined if jumpscares or cerebral horror was the best way to frighten gamers; it turned out that cerebral horror was the best (read that post here).
While that post is pretty darn conclusive – it wasn’t science and it certainly doesn’t mean that jumpscares do not have their place in gaming. I’d be a big fat liar if I said that I’ve never been gotten by a jumpscare (or five).
So here are my personal favourite jump scares that made me squeal like a little girl. Continue reading
Bonus Post Alert!
Today in the UK is the first official day of Autumn and that means that the clocks have went back by one hour! So what are you to do with that extra hour? Play games of course, and because it’s the day before Halloween; you should be playing horror games!
Why play through a longer game though? You don’t have an extra eight hours, only one! So here is a selection of short horror experiences that shouldn’t last more than an hour; turn the lights down and turn the volume up – it’s time to scare the living crap, out of yourself! Continue reading
…nothing fazes me!
As you all know, for Halloween this year I thought I would tackle the totally original idea of doing a horror game play through for YouTube. Not only did has it been taking me out of my comfort zone but I have also noticed something else as the game has gone on. Continue reading
…I am not prepared.
So, yesterday was my lucky day! MrLuvva invited me over to Luvva Towers to try out his Playstation VR! The first thought that popped into my head was “YES! Rush of Blood here I come”. The problem being he invited me several days ago and then he posted that article about how scary VR games are… Continue reading
