Last week I spent an article looking at the crappy PSOne platformers that I would least likely see get remakes/remasters in the current gen; but don’t you guys think that there is plenty negativity in gaming already? Wouldn’t you prefer to see some positivity instead?
Good news that I had this article lined up and ready to go then isn’t it?
Here are the three Platform games that I would most want to see receive a current-gen remake/remaster! Continue reading
With all the rumours flying around (thanks Kotaku!) about a possible ‘Spyro the Dragon Trilogy Collection’ coming soon, it got me thinking, what is with the nostalgia for PSONE platformers? Let’s be honest here, the genre was a dime a dozen on the system and for every good one there were, at least, 3 terrible games!
I remember being a kid everything was exciting, there were no worries or issues (although weirdly I used to lose sleep worrying that people would die) and everything was fun. Being a kid was amazing – I used to do whatever I wanted, when I wanted (well when I was allowed to).
As I’ve gotten older though my life has slowed down; as a teenager I got bogged down by GCSEs and the pressure of doing well in school. In my later teens work got in the way of fun and now that I am an adult, with a child – fun has definitely fallen down the pecking order of priorities.
Why am I giving you the history of luvva lesson? Well games have followed the same trajectory! In the early (ish) days they were all about fun and as they’ve gotten older the pressure of making money has taken over from that and they have become much more subdued (read as mature).
Here are a few things I miss about gamings formative years Continue reading
In 2014 I wrote a post that outlined a few big gaming Youtube Channels you should be watching; since then though a few (opengriefing) have become very inactive and one (DLCentral) has closed down. RIP. (We love you Matt and Nate – check them out here though)
So the time has come for us to update this list. Once again all these channels are my own personal choices (MrJohnSherry will disagree with some of my choices) but they still carry the MrLuvvaLuvva seal of approval® and you are still guaranteed a damn good time*
I will be doing another post on much smaller channels you should be paying attention too – before they become the next big thing on Youtube!
So why not stop being a reader (just for a few minutes though) and become a watcher; a watcher of gamers, a watcher of gamers on Youtube… Continue reading
So Gamescom 2016 is underway and the information is slowly seeping out into the wild – some of the releases have been pretty awesome as well!
“Which ones Luvva?” I hear you scream – well slow down there partner; if I told you here (before the read more) then what will you read today?
I have been super impressed with much of what I have seen from Gamescom, there is a lot of good stuff coming our way; regardless of platform that you play on! So impressed in fact that I have had to edit this post down because there was just too much video causing the page to load way too slowly.
What follows then is the five games I am most looking forward to playing from Gamescom. Continue reading
This week has been a tumultuous one for the UK; first of all the Brexit occurred meaning that we will soon be swimming in uncharted waters dying of starvation or something! The brexit led to the resignation of David Cameron – a good move on his part, he’s allowing the Brexiters to clean up their own mess.
Next up Norther Ireland and England have been unceremoniously dumped out of Euro 2016 – which prompted the England manager, Roy Hodgson quitting his position within 10 minutes of the final whistle! Rightfully so to be honest, he had the dreams of a nation on his shoulders and he provided them with a shoddy product – the team looked unlikely to win any game throughout the tournament.
It was an honourable thing to do; quit.
There are game developers out there who should’ve taken a page from Davey Cam’s and Woy’s playbook – and quit after delivering shitty games!
“who?!” I hear you ask – well sit down dear reader and let me tell you who! Continue reading
Today sees the hotly anticipated return of the comedy article! Enjoy and remember – satire be here!
So in the aftermath of the news that Zoe Quinn has won her case against her ex-boyfriend; not her criminal case but the subsequent suit that stated the restraining order she had placed on him infringed on his human rights, I decided to chat about the whole affair – something I haven’t done up to this point.
Gamergate is (was?) a funny scandal that proclaimed to be the voice for ethical video game journalism but basically revolved around grown men (I assume) attacking prominent females in the industry. They decided the best way of achieving their “aim” was to deliver doxxing threats, death threats, rape threats, bomb threats among other things of varying severity. Many of the recipients weren’t actually journalists though – so ?!
When these women opened up about the abuse they had been receiving it become open season on them on the internet…
…hopefully we can move on from this bullshit. But it got me thinking, as a movement Gamergate has failed miserably and will achieve nothing – so here are few “gates” that have achieved much, much more. Continue reading
About a month ago I told everyone who follows me on twitter to sign up for the Pokemon newsletter because they were advertising that everyone who signs up would get a code for one of the legendary birds(distributed at random). Well this morning I got my email and instead of just one code, I got a code for them all! What an awesome surprise!
It got me thinking, what are the best surprises that gaming has ever given us?
Lets dive through the history books and take a peak shall we? Continue reading
I’m sure we all heard the news yesterday; Codemasters announced the acquisition of Evolution Studios. This acquisition means that Codemasters are now the premiere suppliers of racing games in the world (not bad for a small UK startup in the mid-80s) with some genuine world-class talent.
Personally I think this is a great move for both companies. We have Codemasters who are the leaders in the racing game genre but have struggled with next-gen technology and Evo who have intimate knowledge of the architecture and inner-workings of the market leading machine; the PS4.
I personally think Evolution are the perfect candidates to update the creaking EGO engine – I think we can all agree that ‘Driveclub’ looked absolutely stunning! Hopefully Codemasters can find a place for them within their structure and we can start to see exciting new projects too – while I’m not a fan of past games I’d love to see if, with help from Codies, they can make ‘Motorstorm’ a genuinely good series!
While we look ahead, why not look behind us?
Here is my personal top 5 (a list! I haven’t done one of these in ages!) games from both companies. Continue reading
Gaming mechanics are literally, the fundamentals of every game we play; they govern everything in every game. They are why we love (and hate) some titles and genres. They aren’t just important they are imperative!
And yet they, like everything else in gaming, can become a slave to the fashion and throughout gaming history there have been many, many instances of mechanics being implemented because they are cool, rather than they improve the game. Some of these mechanics were awful and some were awesome, I’ll leave you to decide which is which.
What I have here are some of the biggest gaming mechanic fads that have transpired in my lifetime – if you can think of any more, please tell me in the comments/twitter/facebook. Continue reading
