Backlog Blitz: October 2017

Backlog

I’m finally getting round to catching up on my post backlog (let alone making a dent in my game backlog))!

October continued the rich vein of form I had of completing games that started in September – I absolutely hammered a number of horror games in anticipation of Hallowe’en.

But it’s been ages so let’s recap the year so far and the rules of my little challenge to myself:

  • I must complete 52 games in 2017
  • The games can be ones that I have previously started or have previously completed and they can be on any platform
  • Episodic games count as one game per episode
  • Lengthy DLC (ie Blood & Wine) counts as a game
  • Everytime I complete a game I score +1
  • Every time I buy a game I score -2
  • By the end of the year I must finish with a positive score or I have failed the Backlog Blitz

Year Score (So far) = -22

Games Bought: Dead By Daylight

Games Completed: Dino Crisis, Resident Evil: The Director’s Cut, Resident Evil 3, Rise of the Tomb Raider.

Thankfully Sony’s only sale this month was a Hallowe’en one, this is the only sale where I know I am safe; because I buy too damn many horror games. They did get me with Dead by Daylight though, it was too good an offer (plus Sherry had been on me to download it for weeks) – that’s a damn good game; even if it is bloody difficult to play the killer.

friday-the-13th-listing-thumb-01-ps4-us-21jun17Playing DBD made me hanker for the game I’d been waiting on October to redeem; Friday the 13th! I backed this game way back when but wanted to wait until Hallowe’en to experience it in all its creepy glory – it was a brilliant game; nothing at all like DBD, in fact it’s a brilliant companion game to DBD as they are so different.

Friday the 13th is so good it got me back into online play in a massive way! I actively looked for people on my friends list who had the game and chased them until they agreed to play with me (hey Hydr0!). It is always fantastic fun to play this game with friends, stratgising how to best circumnavigate Jason and making it to freedom! Top, top stuff!

I got so into online play that, for ages, I found myself playing one and instantly rotating to the other – unfortunately for this challenge, playing uncompletable games (unless you count reaching max level; which I do) non-stop is not a great idea!

If you hadn’t guessed by my completed games list; October is when I get the desire to scare myself silly and play all my favourite horror games again (I swear this is year 5 of playing Dino Crisis in October). This year I was drawn to those PSOne games that I loved so dearly as a wee’un! I have bought most of them and they had been just sitting there waiting for me to boot them up!

This year was no different, I played the hell out of the RE series on my VITA (those PS One games are as good as ever; but WTF is with that soundtrack on ‘The Director’s Cut’?) and I dusted off the trusty PSP because, unfortunately, Dino Crisis on the Dreamcast is not compatible with the VGA cable (which is the only way I play the DC now). And do you want to know what? That game runs perfectly on the PSP! It was bloody fantastic as well – it inspired me to go back to the second after all these years; it’s not as good. Not at all. I did go back and restart Dino Crisis to play a challenge run through (was attempting on killing no animals except the ones that need to die to progress) but it was a move too far – I am not skilled enough in its movement system to even attempt this. I was a victim of hubris – and I paid the price.

It was a great month in which I got a lot of gaming done (even if I didn’t complete an awful lot of them) – however I made a mistake near the end of the month; I convinced a friend to buy Titanfall 2 and I have ended up becoming fully addicted to its multiplayer again! This will undoubtedly have a negative effect on the next couple of months – which is a killer; but let’s be fair here, it’s not as if I’m going to succeed in my challenge this year…

…is it?

Year Score (So far) = -20
