Iterative consoles are great for the industry

All over the Internet there are rumours and “leaks” claiming that both Microsoft and Sony are readying the Xbox 1.5 and PlayStation 4K for release in the very near future. Of course the Internet has reacted in the default way – rage – lots and lots of rage. Comments such as “I am done with Sony if this is true” and “fuck Microsoft” are all too common place, and premature if you ask me.

Iterative consoles have the potential to change the gaming landscape in a very positive way.

If they are done right it could be the best thing to ever happen gaming.

“How?!” I hear you scream at your monitor. Well in the following ways dear reader.

It would get rid of console generations

console-curse-generationsSince the dawn of time, we gamers have bought our consoles with the knowledge that in 3-7 years (depending on generation) it would be superseded by something better. While this is fine, it means that the devices AND the games have a shelf life that is incredibly short. This means that one day soon, those discs/cartridges we have bought will be unplayable and until pretty recently they never been repressed onto new hardware (unlike the movie industry). Games are being forgotten and discarded at an alarming rate, and many will never see the light of day again!

Iterative consoles though would get rid of all this! By removing the cycle of releasing new hardware with new architecture; games would remain playable, theoretically at least, forever!

Wouldn’t it be great to play your favourite game today with your children in 20 years time; that’s a rhetorical question because the answer is yes!

It would be much cheaper for consumers

cheapIf you get rid of console generations then that means the costs of being a console gamer will drop. No longer will we have to walk to the shop and pick up our new PlayStation/Xbox/Nintendo and drop £400 on the privilege.

For iterative hardware we could current model to the game store, trade it in and get the newer model for £100-£150, and that’ll be us for the next 2 years. If the console is modular (as Phil Spencer would like) we could spend £200 on a memory/graphics card/processor, bring it home, install it and play the latest games with more frames per second or higher textures.

It could be a dreamland for us.

Fanboy wars would be brought to end…

Fanboys…over hardware at least.

If you can upgrade your console as and when you like; and the consoles upgrades would make them almost exactly thre same. Then there would be very little for fanboys to argue over. Even PC Master Race guys would have to shut up as the gap between consoles and PCs would be smaller than ever; for the more wealthy the gap could potentially be closed altogether.

The only thing left to argue over would the games, and let’s be honest here, who among us has a strong connection with the games we play? Very few of us. If you vehemently defend a game then you have issues.

As someone who has had a few run-ins with fanboys over the years, I would more than welcome this.

Bad ports would no longer exist

bad portsRemember playing the Xbox 360 version of ‘Bayonetta’ and loving it so much you bought the PS3 version and it was a steaming pile of crap?

Remember trying to play ‘Arkham Knight’ on your PC and it locked up repeatedly?

Remember playing any number of bad ports and thinking to yourself “surely there has to be a better way of gaming!” Well there is a better way. Iterative consoles are the better way! Lets be realistic, there are only 1 or 2 companies who make the components for PC and consoles; it would be in everyone’s best interests to use the same chipset in the consoles. This means that there is no bothersome compatibility issues when it comes to upgrading! In fact it would HAVE to be this way. Upgrading must be made simple to accommodate the idiots of this world! It would also mean that the consoles would be EXACTLY the same (component-wise) which would remove the need for porting which in turn would remove the bad ports!

Unbelievably good for everyone involved!

No more false borders in multiplayer

There is absolutely no reason outside of a USP that PS4 players and Xbox One players cannot play against one another – Sony and Microsoft both need their own multiplayer platform for reasons I cannot fathom. As a result of this though they have locked out the other console and we have been divided in fun since 2002 and the birth of Xbox Live.

For as long as I remember the general excuse has been, the consoles have significantly different hardware and architecture and making the online arena fair over platforms is a logistical nightmare.

Well if you look above, iterative hardware means that the consoles are, more or less, identical to one another and this should result in allowing us to play with our brothers and sisters on the other system. Iterative hardware will allow for a truly open gaming experience that was promised with the internet explosion, I for one look forward to playing Xbone users in the hot MP game of 2018.

Of course Sony and Microsoft can keep their marketplaces to their system, still make a tidy profit and keep their exclusive count up as they do now – they will just have no more excuses for creating their walled gardens of multiplayer arenas.
