7/10 Game-a-thon: Proteus

Memorial_in_Proteus

This month on PS Plus Curve Studios released their latest game upon an unsuspecting public. It is fair to say that I have never played a game quite like ‘Proteus’ before. Although can a game with no objective, narrative or character really be a good game?

Is hype killing the games industry?

Watch-Dogs

Ah the good old fashioned hype-train. It’s been around for decades y’know. Maybe even longer (alas there are no cave drawings of hype; or maybe we’re just misinterpreting them and they are all ancient adverts). We all love it. We all buy into it. When we don’t engage with it we are disappointed; but is hype slowly killing the games industry?

Can survival horror recapture mainstream success?

Survival-Horror-frikarte

One of the most exciting things  to come out of Gamescom this year was the influx of survival horror games; news of the Resident Evil Re-remake was only the beginning, we also got Alien Isolation, Alone in the dark reboot and Silent Hills. My question for developers though is can this genre really enjoy the mainstream success it enjoyed in the late ’90s/early 2000s?

A Quick History Of Third Party Exclusives…

rise_of_the_tomb_raider1

Well Gamescom was quite the show wasn’t it? Undoubtedly the biggest controversy was the reveal that Rise of the Tomb Raider is a timed-Xbox exclusive. The internet exploded into a fan-boy rage with people shouting “BOYCOTT” at the top of their lungs (from atop their soapboxes). So buckle yourself in as we look through the history of third-party exclusives; some of these may shock you…some won’t.

Microsoft’s Gamescom conference, news and thoughts

gamescom-2014

Ah Gamescom, the second biggest gaming show of the year! It’s opening it’s doors in the traditional way, press conferences from the usual suspects – we’re are going to be focusing on the two biggest presser’s Sony and Microsoft. We expect shots to be fired and they should be great shows that are hopefully full of gameplay videos and surprises. However the reality is usually very different from expectation – no doubt Sony and Microsoft will find news ways to disappoint…we will cast out these negative feelings and remain optimistic. Microsoft; it’s over to you.
